Deck overview

This deck is an Abzan toughness-matters combat deck helmed by Felothar the Steadfast. It leverages low-cost, high-toughness defender creatures to construct an impenetrable early defense that pivots into an aggressive attack force once Felothar or an equivalent 'butt-strike' enabler enters the battlefield. The mana base and acceleration rely on defender-scaling engines like Overgrown Battlement and Axebane Guardian to generate large bursts of mana. Because its creatures possess negligible printed power, the deck breaks parity on potent asymmetric board wipes like Slaughter the Strong and The Battle of Bywater, sweeping away opponents' threats while leaving its own board completely intact. Draw engines like Felothar's sacrifice ability and Fecund Greenshell keep the hand full of gas, while mass recursion cards like Nethroi, Apex of Death and Reunion of the House return virtually the entire graveyard to play in the event of an opposing board wipe.
