Deck overview

This is an Abzan combo-stax list built around Ghave, Guru of Spores. Ghave turns +1/+1 counters into Saprolings and Saprolings back into counters, and the deck pairs that engine with token doublers, sacrifice outlets, and a deep prison suite. Primary wins are infinite token, mana, and counter loops-Ghave, Guru of Spores with Doubling Season or Cathars' Crusade plus Ashnod's Altar or Earthcraft-and a commander-independent two-card kill in Heliod, Sun-Crowned plus Walking Ballista. While you assemble, Winter Orb, Rule of Law, Braids, Cabal Minion, Smokestack, and The Abyss stall the table. Alternate locks animate every land with Living Plane or Kormus Bell plus Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, then sweep them with Night of Souls' Betrayal, Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite, or Pestilence. Ghave is a five-mana combo piece and the best token engine, but complete combo and prison lines live in the 99, so he is important rather than mandatory.
