Deck overview

This Mardu deck executes a Voltron control strategy built around Zurgo Helmsmasher. The deck uses a massive 45-land mana base to ensure consistent land drops every turn up to five mana on Turn 5. Because Zurgo possesses haste and indestructible on the active player's turn, the deck leverages numerous symmetrical board sweepers like Shatter the Sky, Depopulate, and Single Combat to clear blockers while leaving Zurgo unharmed. Once on the board, Zurgo deals 7 commander damage per hit, which accelerates to 14 damage when equipped or enchanted with double-strike modifiers such as Flaming Fist, Battle Mastery, or Fireshrieker. The list protects its commander across opponent turns with a dense package of nine 1-mana protection instants like Blacksmith's Skill and Gods Willing. While the deck features strong removal and resilient combat swings, its sequential single-target damage clock gives the table multiple turn cycles to find answers.
