Deck overview

This deck is an Abzan toughness-matters midrange combat deck commanded by Doran, Besieged by Time. The strategy leverages creatures with disproportionately high toughness to exploit Doran's static cost reduction and explosive combat trigger, which grants +X/+X equal to the difference between power and toughness. Early turns focus on deploying defensive creatures like Arboreal Grazer, Armored Armadillo, and mana dorks. Once Doran enters on Turn 4, modest defensive walls become formidable offensive beaters: Doran attacks as a 5/10 and Unhallowed Phalanx swings as a staggering 13/25. The deck compounds this board advantage with payoffs like Ancient Lumberknot, Betor, Kin to All, and Canopy Gargantuan. While the deck generates massive power on curve and protects its board with spells like Duty Beyond Death, it relies entirely on fair combat damage without innate haste or stack interaction, giving opponents three response cycles to answer its ground assaults before closing the game on Turn 8.
