Deck overview

This Rakdos deck operates as an aggressive Group Slug engine led by Valgavoth, Harrower of Souls. The strategy pairs low-cost, symmetrical life-loss permanents—such as Roiling Vortex, Razorkin Needlehead, and Underworld Dreams—with Valgavoth's triggered ability. Whenever opponents lose life on their own turns, Valgavoth grows into a lethal flying threat while drawing up to three additional cards per table rotation. The deck converts this steady card advantage into heavy board attrition and damage multipliers like Solphim, Mayhem Dominus, Ojer Axonil, Deepest Might, and Manabarbs, rapidly depleting opposing life totals while shutting down life gain. A lack of dedicated stack interaction and sparse protection spells leave the commander vulnerable to targeted removal. However, dense redundancy among punitive artifacts and enchantments ensures that the burn engine functions effectively even if Valgavoth is answered. The deck finishes games through massive flying commander attacks, compounding burn triggers, or decisive late-game sorceries like Torment of Hailfire and Chandra's Ignition.
