Deck overview

This deck is an aggressive Simic Merfolk kindred and +1/+1 counters engine commanded by Hakbal of the Surging Soul. It leverages low-cost Merfolk creatures to establish early board presence before deploying Hakbal on Turn 4. Hakbal immediately triggers mass explore at the beginning of combat, smoothing land drops, drawing cards, and distributing +1/+1 counters across the entire squad. The deck accelerates mana velocity through exploration triggers and cost reducers like Stonybrook Banneret, quickly transitioning into a snowballing mid-game. Evasion enablers such as Herald of Secret Streams and Master of the Pearl Trident convert buffed Merfolk into unblockable attackers, while asymmetric board resets like Raise the Palisade and Wave Goodbye clear opposing defenses. Robust interactive spells and defensive layers—including Vodalian Hexcatcher, Counterspell, and Ripples of Potential—protect the creature suite from removal and sweepers. The deck steadily overwhelms all three opponents through compounded combat damage, closing out the game around Turn 8.
