Deck overview

This deck is a Rakdos group slug strategy commanded by Valgavoth, Harrower of Souls. The game plan revolves around deploying cheap, passive damage sources like Razorkin Needlehead, Roiling Vortex, and Ankh of Mishra that deal damage whenever opponents take standard actions. Once Valgavoth enters the battlefield on Turn 4, these life-loss triggers cause Valgavoth to grow rapidly and draw three additional cards every table rotation. The deck converts this overwhelming card advantage into additional damage amplifiers like Solphim, Mayhem Dominus, Ojer Axonil, Deepest Might, and Manabarbs. Opponents are caught between losing massive amounts of life to simple actions or succumbing to lethal commander damage from a giant flying Demon. Flexible removal and board wipes keep opposing threats in check, while backup engines like Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin ensure the deck can finish games even without its commander.
