Deck overview

This Golgari deck utilizes Skullbriar, the Walking Grave as a relentless Voltron threat that weaponizes +1/+1 counters and keyword abilities. Because Skullbriar retains all counters as it moves between the battlefield, command zone, and graveyard, death is merely a temporary setback rather than a hard reset. The deck curves out with low-cost ramp into a Turn 2 commander deployment, immediately attacking to begin counter accumulation. In the mid-game, counter multipliers like Branching Evolution and Corpsejack Menace scale Skullbriar's power exponentially, while evasion grants such as Trailblazer's Boots and Whispersilk Cloak ensure combat damage connects. A robust suite of hexproof, indestructible, and recursion effects protects the commander from opposing removal. With opponents pressured one by one, the deck finishes through direct commander damage or bursts from Essence Harvest.
