Deck overview

This mono-black midrange deck is helmed by M.O.D.O.K., transforming life totals into rapid card selection, graveyard sculpting, and a lethal aerial threat. By paying life into M.O.D.O.K.'s connive ability, the deck discards high-cost threats while growing the commander into a massive flying lifelinker that recovers expended life on every swing. The strategy transitions from early board suppression—bolstered by M.O.D.O.K.'s static -1/-1 debuff against enemy utility creatures—into devastating midgame reanimation and drain loops powered by Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Saw in Half, Breach the Multiverse, and Bolas's Citadel. A versatile suite of black interaction, including Snuff Out, Toxic Deluge, and Withering Torment, controls opposing boards while Lightning Greaves and death-trigger rebuys safeguard key permanents. With robust backup engines through K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth and Doom Whisperer, the deck maintains steady pressure and inexorable life drain even if the commander is contested.
