Deck overview

This mono-black control deck uses Kaervek, the Spiteful to suppress opposing boards while grinding out an advantage through targeted removal, life drain, and resilient attackers. Kaervek applies a continuous -1/-1 penalty to all other creatures, clearing away mana dorks, small utility creatures, and token armies. With the board controlled, the deck transitions into the mid-to-late game by deploying substantial threats like Defiling Daemogoth and Gloom Sower, alongside game-swinging life drain from Gray Merchant of Asphodel and Exsanguinate. High-impact spells such as Peer into the Abyss and Decree of Pain refill resources and reset opposing progress. The deck's primary limitations include minimal fast mana acceleration, an absence of stack-based countermagic, inability to destroy resolved artifacts, and reliance on combat damage and incremental drain over multiple turns to eliminate three opponents.
