Deck overview

This deck is a high-powered Merfolk kindred aggro-control engine commanded by Hakbal of the Surging Soul. The strategy establishes early low-curve Merfolk and mana acceleration to deploy Hakbal ahead of curve on turn 3 or 4. At the beginning of combat on each turn, Hakbal triggers explore for every Merfolk on the battlefield, rapidly placing +1/+1 counters on the team, filtering nonlands into the graveyard, and drawing revealed land cards into hand. Hakbal's attack trigger further accelerates mana by cheating lands onto the battlefield. The deck converts this overwhelming board growth and card velocity into a decisive win through evasive combat enablers like Herald of Secret Streams, Islandwalk lords paired with Harbinger of the Seas, or mass overruns like Craterhoof Behemoth. Robust free countermagic, instant-speed protection, and asymmetric stax elements safeguard the engine while disrupting opposing strategies.
