Deck overview

This mono-black deck is led by Volrath the Fallen and combines explosive Voltron one-shot potential with a heavyweight reanimation sub-theme. The main goal is to assemble 6 mana, deploy Volrath, and discard massive creatures like Draco, Shadow of Mortality, or Scion of Draco to instantly boost Volrath's power past 21 for lethal commander damage. Evasion enablers like Lightning Greaves, Key to the City, and Dragon Shadow ensure the commander connects through blockers. If opponents remove Volrath, the deck smoothly transitions into a traditional reanimator strategy, utilizing cards like Buried Alive, Victimize, and Strands of Night to cheat high-impact Eldrazi and Demons directly onto the battlefield. While the deck possesses immense single-target damage and strong creature removal, it remains vulnerable to instant-speed spot removal and relies heavily on natural card draw to find haste and evasion pieces.
