Deck overview

This deck is a focused Rakdos Group Slug strategy helmed by Valgavoth, Harrower of Souls. The game plan revolves around deploying low-cost symmetrical and asymmetrical life-loss permanents such as Roiling Vortex, Razorkin Needlehead, and Ankh of Mishra. Once Valgavoth enters the battlefield on Turn 4, these triggers guarantee that opponents take damage on their own turns, causing Valgavoth to grow rapidly and draw three net cards every turn cycle. The massive influx of cards allows the deck to deploy secondary threats like Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin, The Lord of Pain, and Mogis, God of Slaughter, while keeping opponents' life totals under steady downward pressure. Lacking infinite combos or fast tutors, the deck closes games around Turn 8 through accumulated burn, board wipes, and commander combat damage amplified by cards like Wound Reflection and Chandra's Ignition.
