Deck overview

This deck is a grindy Orzhov control strategy led by Athreos, Shroud-Veiled. The game plan revolves around deploying dense 2-CMC artifact acceleration to establish Athreos on Turn 4 or 5. Once Athreos is in play, it places coin counters on key opposing creatures or high-value attrition engines. The deck then breaks parity on its 9 board sweepers and extensive spot removal suite by reanimating destroyed or exiled coin-marked permanents onto its own battlefield. Opponents are systematically stripped of board presence through asymmetric attrition pieces like Grave Pact, Massacre Wurm, and Sheoldred, the Apocalypse. The endgame transitions into closing out life totals through heavy swings, Akroma's Will, and life-draining triggers from Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Kokusho, the Evening Star, and Archon of Cruelty. While resilient against destruction, the deck operates at sorcery speed and relies on natural draws to find its sacrifice outlets.
