Izzet Death Ray by foov

Format: Commander

Commander: Vhal, Candlekeep Researcher and Passionate Archaeologist

Bracket: 3

Deck overview

An Izzet exile-cast deck built around Vhal, Candlekeep Researcher and the Passionate Archaeologist Background. Vhal's tap ability produces colorless mana that can't cast spells from hand, so the deck fills the exile zone with impulse effects, attack triggers, and Rooms, then uses that mana to chain spells from exile; each such cast makes Vhal's Background trigger and burn for the spell's mana value. Secondary paths are token generation from noncreature spells and huge top-end payoffs like Crackle with Power, Etali, and Dance with Calamity. No hidden commander exists: the Background is an enchantment, and Vhal is the only commander creature. Damage multipliers and untap effects convert Vhal's toughness into a game-ending turn.
