Deck overview

This mono-black control deck focuses on ramping into overwhelming amounts of mana to cast its 9-mana commander, Valgavoth, Terror Eater, or resolve devastating mass-drain sorceries. Early turns focus on artifact ramp, rituals, and mana doublers such as Crypt Ghast and Cabal Coffers. Once Valgavoth enters the battlefield on turn 6, its built-in ward protection of sacrificing three nonland permanents makes it difficult to remove. Valgavoth replaces all opposing graveyard triggers with exile and allows you to cast those exiled spells using life instead of mana. The deck cleanses opposing boards with cards like Damnation and Blasphemous Edict, converting enemy casualties into castable threats. In addition to combat damage from its 9/9 flying commander, the deck contains high-output life-drain finishers including Torment of Hailfire, Exsanguinate, and an infinite life-loss combo featuring Exquisite Blood and Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose.
