Deck overview

This mono-black control and stax deck centers on Tergrid, God of Fright, aiming to systematically strip opponents of resources while converting discarded cards and sacrificed permanents into an overwhelming board presence. The deck utilizes a dense package of symmetrical discard and sacrifice effects, including Dark Deal, Virus Beetle, and Plaguecrafter, to rapidly decimate opposing hands and battlefields. Once Tergrid establishes control on Turn 5, stolen permanents combined with punishing attrition enchantments like Painful Quandary, Grave Pact, and Contamination prevent opponents from rebuilding. While the deck lacks fast mana rocks and universal tutors, its sheer redundancy in discard and edict effects ensures consistent execution of its attrition game plan. Without Tergrid, the deck pivots smoothly into independent high-impact threats like Sheoldred, the Apocalypse, Archon of Cruelty, and Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal. Its primary vulnerabilities stem from light stack protection, vulnerability to targeted creature removal, and an inability to remove resolved noncreature permanents.
