Deck overview

Valgavoth, Harrower of Souls headlines a Rakdos Group Slug deck that turns every opponent's turn into personal card advantage and commander growth. The strategy establishes early low-cost life-loss pieces such as Roiling Vortex, Razorkin Needlehead, and Forsaken Wastes on Turns 1–3 before casting Valgavoth on Turn 4. Because these enablers trigger on each opponent's upkeep or draw step, Valgavoth reliably draws three extra cards per turn cycle while growing into a massive flying threat. In the midgame, the deck compounds pressure with global tax enchantments including Manabarbs, Spellshock, Painful Quandary, and anti-lifegain effects like Sulfuric Vortex. This constant attrition whittles away life totals, punishes opposing spell-casting and land taps, and sets up a Turn 7 close through a combination of lethal noncombat burn, commander combat damage, and burst finishers like Gray Merchant of Asphodel and Massacre Wurm.
