Deck overview

This Golgari midrange deck leverages Jenova, Ancient Calamity to turn non-Human creatures into Mutants and rapidly amplify their power with +1/+1 counters. The game plan opens with low-cost utility creatures and ramp on turns 1 through 3, leading into Jenova on turn 4. Once Jenova begins distributing counters at combat, the deck chains Mutate triggers from cards like Auspicious Starrix, Gemrazer, and Mindleecher onto non-Human hosts, supercharged by counter amplifiers such as Corpsejack Menace and Court of Garenbrig. Card advantage flows from Jenova’s death trigger when buffed Mutants trade in combat or fall to removal, alongside efficient draw spells. A rich suite of low-cost protective spells shields key threats from targeted interaction. The deck closes games around turns 6 to 8 by granting trample to massive creatures with Duskshell Crawler or Brawn, overwhelming opponents in sequential combat steps while applying incidental board attrition.
