Deck overview

This deck is a Mono-Black Control and Combo list commanded by Horobi, Death's Wail. The strategy revolves around weaponizing Horobi's unique static ability, which destroys any creature whenever it becomes the target of a spell or ability. By pairing Horobi with ultra-low-cost, repeatable targeting permanents like Squee's Toy, Cauldron of Souls, Tooth of Chiss-Goria, and Hex Parasite, the deck establishes a ruthless, asymmetric creature lockdown starting around Turn 4. Opponents find it nearly impossible to maintain commanders or creature boards, while cards like Nowhere to Run and Arcane Lighthouse bypass hexproof and ward protections. While suppressing the table and generating card advantage through Morbid Opportunist and Gisa, Glorious Resurrector, the deck works toward its compact primary win condition: Professor Onyx combined with Chain of Smog. Resolving both cards on Turn 6 allows the player to repeatedly target themselves with Smog copies, triggering Onyx's Magecraft ability to drain all opponents from 40 to 0 life in a single turn.
