Deck overview

This deck is an Orzhov Aristocrats and life-drain control list commanded by Athreos, God of Passage. The strategy focuses on deploying low-cost creature fodder, instant-speed sacrifice outlets, and life-draining payoffs such as Blood Artist, Cruel Celebrant, and Bastion of Remembrance. Athreos creates a difficult choice for opponents by either returning dying creatures to your hand or taxing their life totals by 3 for each death. The deck establishes oppressive board control around Turn 5 or 6 using asymmetric sacrifice engines like Grave Pact and Dictate of Erebos, which strip away opposing creatures whenever your own die. It closes games by Turn 8 through cumulative drain, explosive payoffs like Gray Merchant of Asphodel and Bolas's Citadel, or an infinite life-drain combo between Exquisite Blood and Sanguine Bond. While vulnerable to mass exile effects, the deck features strong redundancy and resilient recursion.
