Deck overview

This deck is a Simic Merfolk kindred midrange strategy led by Hakbal of the Surging Soul. The game plan curves out with low-cost Merfolk on turns 1 through 3, deploys Hakbal on turn 4, and uses Hakbal's combat explore triggers to rapidly accumulate +1/+1 counters, hit land drops, and filter card draws. As the board expands, counter enhancers like Branching Evolution and Topography Tracker compound creature stats, while evasion enablers such as Herald of Secret Streams, Master of the Pearl Trident, and Thassa, God of the Sea ensure attacks bypass blockers entirely. Card advantage remains consistently strong through explore land selection and combat damage triggers. The deck wins by delivering decisive, unblockable combat damage across consecutive turn rotations. Its chief vulnerability is a heavy reliance on a wide creature presence, leaving it exposed to mass board wipes if defensive spells like Ripples of Potential are not held in reserve.
