Deck overview

This Gruul deck is an aggressive stompy and anti-noncreature punisher strategy commanded by Ruric Thar, the Unbowed. The deck is built with an almost entirely permanent-based card pool (featuring Primal Surge as its sole non-permanent spell) to avoid self-inflicted damage from Ruric Thar and to exploit asymmetric stax effects. In the early turns, dense one- to three-mana acceleration—including mana dorks, Sol Ring, and Somberwald Sage—propels Ruric Thar onto the battlefield by Turn 4. Once assembled, Ruric Thar taxes opposing noncreature spells for 6 damage each, heavily punishing removal, board wipes, and combo attempts. Supporting hatebears like Collector Ouphe, Harsh Mentor, and Thorn of Amethyst further constrict opposing resource engines. Meanwhile, the deck deploys crushing high-power beaters such as Etali, Primal Conqueror, Xenagos, God of Revels, and Kogla, the Titan Ape, converting mana advantage and creature draw engines into a lethal multi-turn combat finish across the table by Turn 7.
