Deck overview

Surgeon General Commander leads a five-color midrange deck centered on the mutate mechanic. The strategy revolves around deploying non-Human host creatures, establishing the commander to turn every augment, enchant, and mutate trigger into raw card advantage, and chaining mutate creatures like Migratory Greathorn, Illuna, Apex of Wishes, and Nethroi, Apex of Death. Synergies with Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief and Vesuvan Duplimancy rapidly multiply mutate spells and generate substantial token copies, while cost-reducers like Pollywog Symbiote accelerate sequencing. As mutate piles grow, triggers destroy opposing permanents via Dirge Bat and Gemrazer, ramp basic lands, and recur threats from the graveyard. The deck pivots into a decisive game-ending combat step using mass overruns such as Craterhoof Behemoth, Finale of Devastation, or an alpha strike backed by Akroma's Will. Robust protection including Teferi's Protection, Heroic Intervention, and Deflecting Swat ensures mutating boards survive sweepers and targeted removal to seal victory.
