Deck overview

This Golgari deck centers on Skullbriar, the Walking Grave, leveraging its unique ability to retain counters across public zones to execute a fast, resilient Voltron strategy. Skullbriar enters on Turn 2 with haste, immediately attacking to generate +1/+1 counters. The deck accelerates this growth through keyword counters (Titanoth Rex, Daring Fiendbonder, Slippery Bogbonder), counter doublers (Invigorating Surge, Solidarity of Heroes), and continuous growth engines (Evolutionary Escalation). A dense, low-mana protection suite (Tamiyo's Safekeeping, Snakeskin Veil, Kaya's Ghostform) shields the commander from spot removal while preserving mana efficiency. Because counters persist through death, exile, and command zone recasts, the deck recovers rapidly from destruction. The deck pressures the table sequentially, eliminating opponents between Turns 4 and 6. Its primary vulnerabilities are bounce spells that return Skullbriar to hand or library, mass non-destruction sweepers, and the inherent clock limitations of single-target combat damage.
