Deck overview

This is a Simic Merfolk tribal deck helmed by Hakbal of the Surging Soul, built to weaponize the explore mechanic as a self-perpetuating engine of +1/+1 counters, land ramp, and card flow. Every combat, the entire Merfolk team explores, feeding the counter synergy packages (Hardened Scales, Branching Evolution, Herald of Secret Streams) while Hakbal's attack trigger converts explored lands into additional land drops or draws. The classic islandwalk lord core - Lord of Atlantis, Master of the Pearl Trident, Merfolk Mistbinder, Merrow Reejerey - makes the wide, counter-stuffed board nearly impossible to block. Card advantage is centralized in Kindred Discovery, Seafloor Oracle, Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca, and Cold-Eyed Selkie. There are no infinite combos; the deck wins through repeated evasive alpha strikes, backed by a small protection suite (Heroic Intervention, Inspiring Call, Ripples of Potential) and one-sided mass bounces to clear opposing boards. Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca and Emperor Mihail II function as "hidden commanders" that keep the plan functional if Hakbal is removed.
