Deck overview

This deck is a high-synergy Merfolk typal aggro-control engine commanded by Hakbal of the Surging Soul. The strategy revolves around deploying efficient low-cost Merfolk to establish an early board, then casting Hakbal to initiate repeated explore triggers at the beginning of each combat step. Explore smoothly fuels the deck's resource engine by filtering nonlands into graveyard or +1/+1 counters while putting land cards directly into hand, which Hakbal and Nicanzil, Current Conductor cheat onto the battlefield. The accumulated counters quickly build a massive, evasive army enabled by unblockability effects like Herald of Secret Streams and islandwalk lords. To safeguard this combat-centric clock, the deck runs a premier suite of free and efficient counterspells including Force of Will, Fierce Guardianship, and Flare of Denial, alongside board protection like Heroic Intervention. It delivers overwhelming, resilient creature pressure without relying on fragile infinite combos.
