Deck overview

Gargos, Vicious Watcher is the deck's central engine. Early mana creatures, Auras, land tutors, and Sol Ring accelerate the six-mana commander, after which most Hydras become dramatically cheaper. The preferred operating state is Gargos, Garruk's Uprising, and a large Hydra such as Hydra Omnivore. The Uprising supplies cards as large creatures enter, while Gargos turns targeted protection effects into creature removal. The deck usually develops value before presenting its real threat. A turn-8 finish uses Triumph of the Hordes and Aspect of Hydra to give Hydra Omnivore enough power to place ten poison counters on each opponent in one combat. This is a strong finite payoff, but the list has limited tutoring, little stack interaction, and a high dependence on keeping its board intact for a turn. It is best suited to slower, creature-oriented Commander tables rather than competitive pods.
