Deck overview

This deck is a mono-black control and attrition strategy commanded by Valgavoth, Terror Eater. The game plan revolves around controlling the battlefield with symmetric sacrifice creatures, generating massive mana through Swamps and doublers, and deploying high-impact threats. Valgavoth serves as an oppressive top-end finisher, locking out opponent graveyard strategies by exiling cards and allowing you to cast their best spells by paying life. Complementing the commander are potent standalone engines such as Bolas's Citadel, Rottenmouth Viper, Sheoldred // The True Scriptures, and Breach the Multiverse. Life totals are actively weaponized using cards like K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth and Necropotence, while lifegain outlets like Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Ayara, First of Locthwain, and Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose convert resource generation into decisive table-wide drain. The deck excels at grinding out multiplayer games through relentless attrition, board resets, and overwhelming late-game mana velocity.
