Deck overview

This deck is a Golgari Insect typal and graveyard reanimator strategy commanded by Grist, the Hunger Tide. Grist acts as a self-contained engine from the command zone, providing continuous token generation, self-mill, and creature removal while counting as an Insect creature card in all non-battlefield zones. The primary strategy focuses on deploying Grist on Turn 3, accelerating self-mill through cards like Hermit Druid—which rapidly empties the library due to running only six basic lands—and stocking the graveyard with high-impact Insects. On Turn 5, the deck pivots into critical onset by casting mass reanimation spells like Living Death or resolving swarm anthems like Beastmaster Ascension and Craterhoof Behemoth. Disruptive engines such as Grave Pact, Oppression, and Arboria severely restrict opposing boards and hands, breaking parity through sacrificial token fodder. While vulnerable to graveyard hate and a tight 23-land mana base, the deck possesses strong resilience through commander recasts and retrace recursion.
