Deck overview

The deck develops a Merfolk board, then uses Hakbal of the Surging Soul to make every combat step generate selection, lands, and +1/+1 counters. Early acceleration from Sol Ring, Birds of Paradise, Wild Growth, Exploration, and land tutors supports a turn-4 commander and a usable turn-5 exploration engine. The main pressure plan combines wide creature production with Herald of Secret Streams, Lord of Atlantis, or Master of the Pearl Trident to make attacks difficult to block. Bident of Thassa, Seafloor Oracle, Svyelun of Sea and Sky, and Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca turn successful attacks into cards or additional counters. Triumph of the Hordes can convert a developed board into a fast table finish, but the deck must retain enough creatures and usually gives opponents one response cycle after its critical turn. Its interaction and protection are useful, though not broad enough for a compact competitive-combo environment.
