Deck overview

This Gruul deck is led by Toph, Hardheaded Teacher, combining traditional lands-matter ramp with the earthbending mechanic to transform lands into resilient, hasty attackers. The deck accelerates in the opening turns through dense 1- to 3-CMC land ramp spells like Farseek, Cultivate, and Harrow. Once Toph enters the battlefield, every spell cast—especially Lessons such as Earthbending Lesson and Shared Roots—animates lands with +1/+1 counters. Because earthbent lands return to the battlefield tapped whenever they die or are exiled, the deck naturally shrugs off opposing creature sweepers while expanding its mana base. The mid-to-late game pivots into overwhelming combat pressure via massive pump and overrun effects from Bumi, Unleashed, Tyvar, the Pummeler, Avenger of Zendikar, and Titania, Protector of Argoth. Defensive tools like Constant Mists and Inspiring Call protect life totals and boards while closing out the game across multiple explosive combat phases.
