Deck overview

This deck is a Rakdos Group Slug midrange strategy commanded by Valgavoth, Harrower of Souls. The game plan revolves around deploying cheap, passive life-loss permanents such as Roiling Vortex, Razorkin Needlehead, and Underworld Dreams early, then casting Valgavoth on curve. Because Valgavoth triggers whenever an opponent loses life for the first time on their turn, these symmetrical and draw-punishing effects immediately turn into a steady stream of +1/+1 counters and up to three additional cards drawn per turn cycle. With an overflowing hand, the deck controls the battlefield using efficient spot removal and sweepers like Blasphemous Act and Massacre Wurm, while forcing awkward combat trades with Kardur, Doomscourge. As opponents' life totals fall from passive burn and an evasive, growing commander, the deck closes the game via burst drain from Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Syr Konrad, the Grim, or a large Exsanguinate.
