Deck overview

This Sultai deck is helmed by Volrath, the Shapestealer, functioning as a versatile counters-matter midrange deck with explosive shapeshifter payoffs. The deck curves low-CMC mana dorks and rocks into counter generators such as Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons, Generous Patron, and Innkeeper's Talent. Once Volrath enters on Turn 4, it leverages its ability to place counters and copy any countered creature as a base 7/5 for a single mana. Copying Cephalid Constable allows Volrath to bounce 7 permanents on combat connection, creating a brutal soft-lock against key threats and mana bases. Simultaneously, copying Cold-Eyed Selkie refills the hand with 7 cards, and Giggling Skitterspike deals 7 direct damage to each opponent on attack. Supported by robust counter-based protection spells and alternate beatdown engines like Kodama of the West Tree and Ghalta, Primal Hunger, the deck maintains dominant board control and finishes opponents across Turns 7-8.
