Deck overview

This deck is a Gruul Voltron and forced-combat strategy designed to exploit Tahngarth, First Mate's unique multiplayer attack trigger. Because Tahngarth's text prevents him from being blocked by more than one creature, granting him menace via cheap Auras like Madcap Skills or Sticky Fingers makes him completely unblockable. Once tapped in combat, Tahngarth can join opponents' attacks on their turns, dealing substantial commander damage to defending players during every combat phase. Goad mechanics and combat incentives such as Agitator Ant, Curse of Opulence, and Jolene, the Plunder Queen encourage opponents to attack one another, accelerating the clock. Card draw engines like Keen Sense and Snake Umbra trigger repeatedly across multiple combat steps per table rotation. If Tahngarth is contained, Alexios, Deimos of Kosmos provides a potent backup plan by growing and attacking each combat step.
