Deck overview

This is a focused Hakbal of the Surging Soul Merfolk deck. Its primary plan is to establish Hakbal with one or more Merfolk, explore at each combat, convert explored lands into extra battlefield mana, and grow the board with counters and tribal effects. Deeproot Waters, Deeproot Pilgrimage, Deeproot Elite, Hardened Scales, and Dancing from Dark to Dawn compound creature development. Herald of Secret Streams is the main evasion payoff, while Lord of Atlantis, Master of the Pearl Trident, and Merrow Reejerey raise damage. The deck can draw heavily through Bident of Thassa, Rhystic Study, Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca, and Tatyova, Benthic Druid, but those engines are not always assembled with Hakbal. Its counterspell suite is stronger than its removal suite, so it is best at defending a growing board rather than controlling every permanent. The combat finish is credible but slow compared with competitive combo decks.
