Deck overview

This mono-black control and midrange deck uses Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire as an accessible, repeatable tutor engine in the command zone. The early game establishes a defensive perimeter using low-cost deathtouch creatures like Gifted Aetherborn and Nighthawk Scavenger, which actively deter attacks and synergize with ping equipment like Viridian Longbow and Thornbite Staff to wipe opposing creatures. On turn 4, Varragoth attacks and uses his boast ability to place high-impact cards directly on top of the library. The deck transitions into the late game by deploying Bolas's Citadel, allowing you to cast spells from the top of your library using your life total as mana. Heavy-hitting payoffs like Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Massacre Wurm, and Archfiend of Depravity stabilize your life total and dismantle opposing boards, closing out the game through massive devotion drains, Citadel sacrifice activations, and evasive demon combat.
