Deck overview

This Gruul deck operates under a strict, thematic constraint: 100% of its nonland cards are creatures. By eliminating all noncreature spells from the 99, the deck breaks parity on Ruric Thar, the Unbowed and Nikya of the Old Ways. An extensive suite of low-cost mana dorks accelerates development into heavy punishers and stax creatures like Collector Ouphe, Manglehorn, and Magebane Lizard. Once Ruric Thar, the Unbowed enters the battlefield on Turn 4, opponents face a punishing 6-damage tax on every noncreature spell, making conventional removal and combo lines lethal to cast. The deck finishes games through rapid combat scaling using trampling beaters and damage doublers such as Zopandrel, Hunger Dominus and Twinflame Tyrant, or by activating Shaman of Forgotten Ways to collapse opponent life totals.
