Deck overview

This deck is an Orzhov lifegain and drain midrange engine commanded by Niv-Mizzet, Ghost Counsel. The primary strategy focuses on establishing early incidental lifegain sources like Soul Warden, Guide of Souls, and Archivist of Oghma, then deploying Niv-Mizzet or Bolas's Citadel to convert life into massive bursts of card advantage. Once a full grip is acquired, the deck converts life swings into lethal damage through drain multipliers such as Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose, Bloodletter of Aclazotz, Gray Merchant of Asphodel, and Exsanguinate, or through the explosive combo potential of Aetherflux Reservoir and Sensei's Divining Top. The deck runs versatile spot removal to manage opposing threats and uses taxing elements like Blind Obedience and Kambal, Consul of Allocation to buy time.
