Explorers 🔱🧜🏽‍♂️ by k0ng

Format: Commander

Commander: Hakbal of the Surging Soul

Bracket: 4

DeckCheck Threat Index: 23

Deck overview

The deck develops a wide Merfolk board and uses exploration to convert land drops into mana, cards, and +1/+1 counters. Hakbal of the Surging Soul is the main engine: it makes the board explore at combat and either accelerates a land from hand or draws a card when attacking. Path of Discovery, Topography Tracker, Nicanzil, Current Conductor, and Hardened Scales improve that engine. The kill plan is combat-based. Herald of Secret Streams makes countered creatures unblockable, while tribal lords, Beastmaster Ascension, Banner of Kinship, and Overwhelming Stampede increase damage. The deck can protect a developed board with Heroic Intervention, Svyelun of Sea and Sky, and countermagic, and it has useful bounce and creature removal. Its main limits are commander dependence, reliance on a wide board, limited tutoring for enchantment payoffs, and vulnerability to sweepers. It is strongest when it curves creatures into Hakbal of the Surging Soul and keeps one protection spell available.
