Deck overview

This is a Simic Merfolk tribal midrange deck helmed by Hakbal of the Surging Soul. The plan is to flood the board with Merfolk, then weaponize Hakbal's combat-step explore trigger to stack +1/+1 counters, dig lands, and snowball card advantage. Lords (Lord of Atlantis, Master of the Pearl Trident, Merrow Reejerey) and evasion (Herald of Secret Streams, islandwalk, Wonder) turn the swarm lethal, while counter doublers (Hardened Scales, Branching Evolution, Vorel of the Hull Clade) and proliferate (Evolution Sage, Merfolk Skydiver, Karn's Bastion) accelerate the clock. Simic Ascendancy is a non-combat win that rides the same counter engine. The deck wins through wide, often-unblockable combat rather than infinite combos, supported by a respectable instant-speed interaction suite and token makers like Deeproot Waters and Deeproot Pilgrimage.
