Deck overview

Hakbal of the Surging Soul is the engine of a Merfolk +1/+1 counter deck that turns every combat into a library-exploration event. The primary plan is to cast cheap Merfolk early, let Hakbal explore each attacker, and use Topography Tracker and Roaming Throne to make exploration far larger than it should be. Attacks also trigger Deeproot Pilgrimage, flooding the board with hexproof tokens. Herald of Secret Streams turns any counter-carrying creature unblockable, allowing one or two lethal alpha strikes. Simic Ascendancy is a secondary win condition when the counter package arrives, and Mist Dancer, Zegana, and Wonder provide alternate evasion and trample. The deck is not a combo pile; it snowballs through combat and card advantage.
