Deck overview

This deck is a Rakdos Group Slug and Midrange Burn strategy commanded by Valgavoth, Harrower of Souls. The primary game plan revolves around deploying cheap, passive life-loss permanents—such as Roiling Vortex, Razorkin Needlehead, and Underworld Dreams—before resolving Valgavoth on Turn 4. Once assembled, every opponent turn triggers guaranteed life loss, allowing Valgavoth to draw an extra card and gain a +1/+1 counter on each player's turn cycle. This engine generates a massive +3 net card advantage per rotation, rapidly growing the commander into a lethal airborne threat. Mid-game support comes from damage amplifiers like Solphim, Mayhem Dominus, punishing stax creatures like The Lord of Pain and Kaervek the Merciless, and combat redirection via Kardur, Doomscourge. The deck closes games around Turn 9 through scaling commander damage combined with table-wide drain spells such as Gray Merchant of Asphodel and Exsanguinate.
