Deck overview

Volo, Guide to Monsters is a Simic creature-copy engine. The primary plan is to cast creature spells with unique creature types so Volo copies them into tokens, then multiply those tokens with Panharmonicon, Octomancer, Scute Swarm, and Avenger of Zendikar. Secondary paths are the Man-o'-War/Peregrine Drake/Panharmonicon value loop and a hidden draw engine in Volo, Itinerant Scholar, whose Journal turns repeated creature casts into cards. The commander's role is the force multiplier; without him the deck still has token doublers and overruns, but it is much slower. Finishers are Craterhoof Behemoth, End-Raze Forerunners, and Pathbreaker Ibex, usually after a critical mass of tokens.
