Deck overview

This deck is a reactive Esper spellslinger control list commanded by Saruman of Many Colors. The strategy focuses on controlling the early to midgame using an efficient suite of counterspells, spot removal, and card-filtering cantrips. Once Saruman is deployed, the deck leverages its commander's ability by casting two spells each turn to mill opponents and cast their best noncreature spells for free. Supporting pieces such as Archmage Emeritus, Firja, Judge of Valor, and Storm of Saruman reward double-spelling with substantial card advantage and spell duplication. Because the deck eschews infinite combos, fast mana, and heavy tutor packages, it wins through incremental attrition, amass Orc Army tokens, and direct life drain via Syr Konrad, the Grim and Palantír of Orthanc. It excels at long, interactive grind games where opposing graveyards provide an endless supply of high-impact utility.
