Commander: Hakbal of the Surging Soul

Bracket: 4

Deck overview

This deck is a Simic Merfolk tribal build helmed by Hakbal of the Surging Soul, leveraging explore triggers as its core engine. Each Merfolk explores at the beginning of combat, distributing +1/+1 counters and filtering lands into play or cards into the graveyard. The primary plan is to build a wide board of Merfolk lords and token generators, accumulate +1/+1 counters, and finish with an overrun effect like Triumph of the Hordes or overwhelming islandwalk combat. Secondary synergy pieces like Topography Tracker double explore triggers, while Court of Garenbrig can double all counters for explosive growth. The deck has a decent interaction suite with counterspells and flexible removal, but its tutor access is extremely limited, making the combo lines (Intruder Alarm + creature mana + token generation) more theoretical than consistent. The commander is the primary source of card advantage and board development; without it, the deck still functions through other draw engines and tribal lords but loses a significant amount of speed and consistency.
