Deck overview

This Athreos, God of Passage deck operates as an Orzhov aristocrats and tax-attrition engine. It leverages low-cost hatebears such as Drannith Magistrate, Thalia, Heretic Cathar, and Aura of Silence to suppress opponent velocity during the developmental phase. Once Athreos is established, the deck introduces sac outlets and drain pieces like Blood Artist, Cruel Celebrant, and Bastion of Remembrance, forcing opponents into punishing decisions whenever creatures die. Massive mid-game threats like Painful Quandary, Sheoldred, the Apocalypse, Liesa, Shroud of Dusk, and Dictate of Erebos accelerate life loss while keeping opposing boards barren. Rather than sprinting toward infinite combos, the strategy steadily constricts table resources and bleeds life totals down through inescapable tax triggers, combat damage, and repeated sacrifice loops. Its resilience stems from cheap reanimation effects, commander indestructibility, and robust card draw engines that keep the engine fueled into the late game.
