Deck overview

This deck is an Orzhov lifegain and group-slug attrition strategy commanded by Liesa, Shroud of Dusk. The primary game plan establishes early lifegain permanents like Soul Warden and Tithe Drinker before deploying Liesa on Turn 4 or 5. Once on the battlefield, Liesa imposes an unavoidable tax of 2 life on every spell cast by any player, while her 5/5 flying lifelink body attacks to offset life loss and widen the life gap. Redundant drain permanents like Rug of Smothering, Painful Quandary, and Sanguine Bond accelerate the table's life loss, punishing spell-slinging and combo attempts. The deck closes games around Turn 8 through cumulative combat damage, passive drain triggers, or an explosive Debt to the Deathless. While the deck has limited reactive countermagic and relies on sustained board presence, Liesa's unique commander tax ability—paying life instead of mana—provides exceptional recovery from removal and board wipes.
