Creatures by Tenshinzo

Format: Commander

Commander: Mai, Scornful Striker

Bracket: 3

Deck overview

This mono-black deck helmed by Mai, Scornful Striker is a "group slug" attrition strategy that punishes opponents for playing the game. The primary game plan involves deploying a dense suite of creatures that drain opponents on death triggers (Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, Vraan, Executioner Thane), taxing noncreature spells via the commander and Rug of Smothering, and punishing card draw with Sheoldred, the Apocalypse, Orcish Bowmasters, and Fate Unraveler. The deck wins through incremental life loss, accelerated by Bloodletter of Aclazotz doubling life loss on your turn, and topped off with a massive Gray Merchant of Asphodel swing. Recursion engines like The Soul Stone, Bloodghast, and Reassembling Skeleton provide resilience against board wipes, while many sacrifice outlets like Erebos, Bleak-Hearted and Grima Wormtongue convert creatures into continued value. The deck lacks fast mana or explosive combo lines, instead grinding out advantages over multiple turns.
