Tyranid Swarm Upgrade Guide: Double Every X Spell and Counter

Out of the box, Tyranid Swarm strands half its creatures without counters and makes you pay full retail to hit X=5 on Ravenous spells. These $25, $50, and $100 upgrades multiply your X values, put a counter on every creature that enters, and turn The Swarmlord's army into an exile-proof stampede.

Tyranid Swarm is a Temur ramp and +1/+1 counter deck built around two mechanics: Ravenous creatures that enter with X +1/+1 counters and draw a card when X is 5 or more, and [[The Swarmlord]], which draws a card whenever a creature you control with a counter on it dies. Out of the box, the deck is split against itself. Eleven Ravenous Tyranids want big X-spell mana, while a dozen Genestealer Cult cards enter with zero counters and miss every payoff in the list.

If you buy one card today, pick up [[Unbound Flourishing]] for $2.02. It doubles the value of X on every permanent spell you cast, so paying X=3 on a Ravenous Tyranid turns into X=6 on the stack, giving you six counters and the X=5 card draw for half the mana.

  • $25 (27 swaps, $24.96): Doubles X values, untaps [[Magus Lucea Kane]] for extra spell copies, and puts entry counters on every creature.
  • $50 (30 swaps, $49.49): Adds teamwide haste, permanent counter doubling with [[Branching Evolution]], unblockable combat, and one-mana wipe protection.
  • $100 (33 swaps, $99.32): Stacks four counter doublers alongside [[Selvala, Heart of the Wilds]] and [[Terrasymbiosis]] for explosive mana and card draw.

Each tier stands on its own as a complete upgrade from the stock list, so you can jump straight to your budget.

Two Thresholds Run the Hive Fleet

Play the stock precon once and you feel the friction right away. You tap out for [[Gargoyle Flock]], [[Genestealer Locus]], or [[Tyranid Invasion]], then someone wipes the board while [[The Swarmlord]] is out and you draw zero cards off those creatures because none of them had a counter. Or you cast [[Tervigon]] for X=3 on curve because you only have five mana, and it enters as a 3/3 without replacing itself. Even worse, [[Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph]] sits in your hand waiting for sources to deal exactly 1 damage in a deck full of giant monsters, while [[Toxicrene]] actively strips the two-mana X-spell ability that [[Nexos]] grants to your 22 basic lands if [[Toxicrene]] enters after [[Nexos]].

Everything in Tyranid Swarm comes down to two numbers: one counter and X=5. A creature with even a single +1/+1 counter on it gains flying and haste from [[Winged Hive Tyrant]], gets +2/+2 per counter with [[Clamavus]], picks up hexproof and indestructible from [[Tyrant Guard]], and draws a card off [[The Swarmlord]] when it dies. Meanwhile, every Ravenous creature turns into a two-for-one cantrip the moment X reaches 5. Every swap in this guide pushes your board past those two thresholds faster and shields your investment when opponents reach for mass bounce or exile.

How the Deck Wins

Your early turns build a mana engine that treats X=5 as the floor. Basic-land searchers like [[Cultivate]], [[Harrow]], and [[Sporocyst]] stock the battlefield with basics so [[Nexos]] can tap each one for {C}{C} toward {X} costs. Alongside [[Nexos]], [[Magus Lucea Kane]] serves as the lieutenant of the 99: she puts a +1/+1 counter on a creature at the start of combat, taps for {C}{C}, and copies the next {X} spell or ability you use that turn, including the X=5 entry draw on Ravenous creatures.

[[The Swarmlord]] anchors the midgame as both a scaling attacker and board-wipe insurance. It enters with two +1/+1 counters for each time you have cast your commander from the command zone, arriving as a 7/7 on its first cast and a 9/9 on its second. Because its Xenos Cunning ability triggers whenever a creature you control with a counter on it dies, a destroy wipe that kills [[The Swarmlord]] and four modified Tyranids draws you five fresh cards as your board leaves play.

Say you untap on turn five with [[Magus Lucea Kane]], [[Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner]], and five lands. You tap [[Magus Lucea Kane]] for {C}{C}, use [[Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner]] to untap her, and tap her a second time for another {C}{C}. Now you have nine total mana and two delayed copy triggers waiting. Cast [[Tervigon]] for X=7: the original and both token copies enter as 7/7 tramplers, you draw three cards from Ravenous and three more from [[Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner]], and you put 21 trampling power onto the table from a single card.

$25 Upgrade: Hit X=5 Ahead of Curve

For $24.96 across 27 swaps, this tier clears out the orphaned Genestealer Cult and 1-damage cards to supercharge your {X} spells and unify your board under +1/+1 counters. You get an X-doubler, two untappers for [[Magus Lucea Kane]], scaling mana dorks, automatic entry counters for non-Ravenous creatures, and instant-speed answers to exile wipes.

Hitting X=5 on Ravenous creatures without waiting until turn seven is the first priority. [[Unbound Flourishing]] cuts the mana required in half: whenever you cast a permanent spell with {X} in its cost, its triggered ability doubles the value of X on the stack. Pay five mana into [[Mawloc]] for X=3 and [[Unbound Flourishing]] makes X=6, so [[Mawloc]] enters as an 8/8, draws a card off Ravenous, and fights an opposing threat into exile. Cast [[Sporocyst]] ({X}{X}{G}) for X=3 and X doubles to 6, fetching six basic lands onto the battlefield tapped while drawing a card. Backing that up, [[Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner]] and [[Kiora's Follower]] untap [[Magus Lucea Kane]] so she can tap twice for {C}{C}{C}{C} and put two delayed copy triggers on your next {X} spell.

Early ramp shifts from [[Explore]] and slow land Auras like [[Overgrowth]] and [[New Horizons]] into creatures that scale with counters. [[Incubation Druid]] taps for three mana of any type your lands can produce as soon as [[Biophagus]], [[Magus Lucea Kane]], or an entry-counter enabler puts a single +1/+1 counter on it. [[Gyre Sage]] evolves automatically whenever a larger Tyranid enters and taps for {G} per counter, while [[Kami of Whispered Hopes]] acts as both a second [[Hardened Scales]] and a mana dork that taps for mana equal to its power. [[Goblin Anarchomancer]] shaves {1} off every green or red spell you cast, effectively adding +1 to X on almost every Ravenous creature in the list.

To fix the precon's zero-counter creatures and tokens, [[Master Biomancer]] and [[Grumgully, the Generous]] ensure that every non-Human creature and token enters with +1/+1 counters already on it. When a massive [[Termagant Swarm]] dies or [[Tervigon]] connects in combat, those 1/1 Tyranid tokens now enter as 2/2s or 3/3s with counters. That single change gives the entire token swarm flying and haste from [[Winged Hive Tyrant]] and draws you a card for every token that dies alongside [[The Swarmlord]]. [[Benevolent Hydra]], [[High Score]], [[Shang-Chi, Martial Mentor]], and [[Loading Zone]] multiply those counters even further. Because [[Loading Zone]] has Warp {G}, you can cast it for one green mana on a big Ravenous turn to double your counters, let it exile at end step, and recast it permanently on a later turn.

Card draw and board-wipe insurance round out the nonland swaps. [[Garruk's Uprising]] gives your counter-stacked monsters trample and joins [[Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner]] in drawing a card whenever a creature with power 4 or greater enters. If an opponent fires off a mass exile or bounce spell that would bypass [[The Swarmlord]]'s death trigger, [[Greater Good]] lets you sacrifice your largest Tyranids at instant speed to draw cards equal to their power plus an extra card per creature from [[The Swarmlord]]. On defense and disruption, [[Wave Goodbye]] replaces [[Starstorm]] as a one-sided sweeper that bounces every creature without a +1/+1 counter while sparing your board, and [[Beast Within]] replaces [[Toxicrene]] so your own creature never strips [[Nexos]]'s mana ability from your basic lands.

Finally, five tapped or taxing nonbasics ([[Terramorphic Expanse]], [[Rugged Highlands]], [[Thornwood Falls]], [[Temple of Mystery]], and [[Cave of Temptation]]) come out for [[Bountiful Landscape]], [[Rootbound Crag]], [[Hinterland Harbor]], [[Yavimaya Coast]], and [[Shivan Reef]], keeping all 22 basic lands intact for [[Nexos]] and [[Sporocyst]]. Instead of waiting until turn seven to cast a single X=5 creature, you are now doubling X on turn four, copying Ravenous threats twice with [[Magus Lucea Kane]], and turning every token into a flying, card-drawing threat.

$50 Upgrade: Haste, Unblockable Swings, and Counter Doubling

At $49.49 across 30 swaps, the $50 tier eliminates summoning sickness and chump-blocking so your giant Tyranids kill the turn they hit play. It keeps the $25 core: [[Unbound Flourishing]] doubles {X} values on permanent spells, [[Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner]] and [[Kiora's Follower]] untap [[Magus Lucea Kane]] for double spell copies, [[Kami of Whispered Hopes]] and [[Incubation Druid]] fuel big mana turns, and [[Greater Good]] cashes in your board against exile wipes. On top of that foundation, seven mid-range upgrades add permanent counter doubling, teamwide haste, unblockable attacks, and one-mana countermagic.

Out of the box, casting a 10/10 Tyranid means passing the turn and praying it survives three opponents' main phases before it can attack. [[Rhythm of the Wild]] and [[Temur Ascendancy]] close that window. [[Rhythm of the Wild]] makes all your creature spells uncounterable and gives nontoken creatures Riot, letting you choose between haste or an extra +1/+1 counter as each creature enters. Because Riot gives you a choice on every creature, a non-Ravenous utility dork like [[Incubation Druid]] can choose the +1/+1 counter to immediately turn on its three-mana tap ability, while a giant Ravenous Tyranid that already enters with counters can choose haste.

Replacing [[Deathleaper, Terror Weapon]] with [[Temur Ascendancy]] solves a subtle rules gap with [[Magus Lucea Kane]]: token copies of permanent spells created by [[Magus Lucea Kane]] are tokens, so they do not get Riot from [[Rhythm of the Wild]]. [[Temur Ascendancy]] grants haste to every creature you control, tokens included, and draws a card whenever a creature with power 4 or greater enters. With both enchantments on the battlefield, every nontoken creature can choose the extra +1/+1 counter from Riot and still attack immediately with haste from [[Temur Ascendancy]].

Counter scaling and mana velocity jump sharply with [[Branching Evolution]] and [[Defiler of Vigor]]. For {2}{G}, [[Branching Evolution]] upgrades over the $25 tier's [[Shang-Chi, Martial Mentor]] (cutting [[Genestealer Patriarch]]) to double all +1/+1 counters placed on your creatures two turns earlier and on a harder-to-remove enchantment permanent. Even [[The Swarmlord]] enters with four +1/+1 counters on its first cast instead of two, arriving as a 9/9 before any plus-one effects apply. [[Defiler of Vigor]] replaces the counterless [[Tyranid Invasion]] and supercharges green permanent turns: by letting you pay 2 life instead of {G} in casting costs, it frees up an extra mana to pour into {X} on every green Ravenous creature while putting a +1/+1 counter on your entire board every time you cast a green permanent spell.

Closing the game and protecting the lead become effortless with [[Herald of Secret Streams]] and [[Stubborn Denial]]. Where [[Icon of Ancestry]] gave a static +1/+1 buff that never interacted with counter payoffs, [[Herald of Secret Streams]] makes every creature you control with a +1/+1 counter unblockable. And instead of holding up three or four mana for reactive spells, [[Stubborn Denial]] gives you a one-mana hard counter against any noncreature wipe or removal spell as long as you control a creature with power 4 or greater. In the manabase, [[Sulfur Falls]] replaces [[Temple of Epiphany]] as a sixth untapped land swap, ensuring your three-color enchantments and hasty X-spells land right on curve and swing for lethal the turn they enter.

Add Cut Price Why

[[Wave Goodbye]] [[Starstorm]] $1.35 Bounces every opposing creature without a +1/+1 counter while leaving your modified Tyranid board untouched.
[[Return of the Wildspeaker]] [[The Red Terror]] $1.53 Turns your largest Tyranid's power into instant-speed burst draw or buffs the whole squad by +3/+3.
[[Beast Within]] [[Toxicrene]] $0.66 Answers any permanent at instant speed while cutting a creature that strips Nexos's ability from your basic lands.
[[Repulsive Mutation]] [[Aetherize]] $0.68 Stacks X counters on a creature at instant speed and counters a spell using your greatest power.
[[Steelbane Hydra]] [[Acolyte Hybrid]] $0.27 Converts X counters into repeatable instant-speed artifact and enchantment destruction without gifting opponents free cards.

[[Sulfur Falls]] [[Temple of Epiphany]] $0.25 Enters untapped alongside an Island or Mountain to cast multicolor Tyranids on curve.
[[Yavimaya Coast]] [[Temple of Mystery]] $0.33 Supplies untapped green and blue mana from turn one without slowing down your early ramp curve.
[[Shivan Reef]] [[Cave of Temptation]] $0.24 Fixes blue and red mana immediately without taxing you an extra mana every time you tap it.

$100 Upgrade: Exponential Counters and Power-Based Engines

For $99.32 across 33 swaps, the $100 tier turns your counter math into an avalanche that draws cards and generates mana in proportion to your largest creature's power. It keeps the $50 engine: [[Unbound Flourishing]] doubles {X} on permanent spells, [[Branching Evolution]] and [[Loading Zone]] double counters, [[Temur Ascendancy]] and [[Rhythm of the Wild]] grant haste and entry counters, [[Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner]] untaps [[Magus Lucea Kane]], and [[Herald of Secret Streams]] makes your modified board unblockable. Eight high-ceiling upgrades add power-scaling mana, counter-scaling card draw, two more counter doublers, and untapped dual lands.

Once your creatures routinely enter as 10/10s and 15/15s, cards that scale directly off power or counter count break the game wide open. [[Selvala, Heart of the Wilds]] replaces [[Malanthrope]] and pays {G}, {T} to add X mana in any combination of colors equal to the greatest power among creatures you control. With [[The Swarmlord]] on the battlefield as a 7/7 or 9/9, [[Selvala, Heart of the Wilds]] taps for seven to nine mana of any colors on a single activation, and untapping her with [[Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner]] or [[Kiora's Follower]] produces enough mana to cast multiple X=8 Ravenous threats in one main phase.

Beside her, [[Terrasymbiosis]] replaces [[Bone Sabres]] (stepping in for the $50 tier's [[High Score]]) as the premier card-draw enchantment for a Ravenous shell. Once each turn, whenever you put one or more +1/+1 counters on a creature you control, [[Terrasymbiosis]] lets you draw that many cards. Because the trigger is optional ('you may draw that many cards. Do this only once each turn'), you face a rewarding sequencing decision every turn: decline the trigger when [[Magus Lucea Kane]] or [[Innkeeper's Talent]] places a single +1/+1 counter at the start of combat, or when you cast a Ravenous spell in your first main phase, so you can cash in the once-per-turn trigger on whichever event places the biggest pile of counters.

This tier also completes the full counter-multiplying suite by adding [[Ozolith, the Shattered Spire]], [[Innkeeper's Talent]], and [[Kalonian Hydra]]. Together with the precon's [[Hardened Scales]] and the kept [[Kami of Whispered Hopes]], [[Ozolith, the Shattered Spire]] gives you three one-to-three-mana plus-one counter effects. [[Innkeeper's Talent]] starts placing +1/+1 counters on turn two, grants ward {1} to every permanent with a counter on it for {G} at Level 2, and becomes a permanent counter doubler at Level 3 alongside [[Branching Evolution]] and [[Loading Zone]]. Then [[Kalonian Hydra]] enters with four +1/+1 counters (eight or more with your multipliers out) and doubles the number of +1/+1 counters on every creature you control whenever it attacks.

To protect those massive boards without tapping out, [[Mutational Advantage]] replaces [[Aetherize]] (upgrading the $50 tier's [[Repulsive Mutation]]): for {1}{G}{U} at instant speed, it grants all permanents you control with counters on them hexproof, indestructible, and damage prevention until end of turn while proliferating your entire team, including lore counters on [[The First Tyrannic War]] and loyalty on [[Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner]]. In the manabase, [[Stomping Ground]] replaces [[Temple of Abandon]], [[Rejuvenating Springs]] replaces [[Temple of Mystery]], and [[Yavimaya Coast]] cuts [[Evolving Wilds]], giving [[Farseek]] a fetchable Mountain Forest shockland while keeping all 22 basic lands for [[Nexos]]. With the full $100 package online, casting an X=4 Ravenous creature with [[Unbound Flourishing]], [[Hardened Scales]], [[Ozolith, the Shattered Spire]], and [[Branching Evolution]] puts (8 + 2) x 2 = 20 +1/+1 counters onto a hasty, unblockable threat while [[Terrasymbiosis]] draws twenty cards on the spot.

Add Cut Price Why
[[Unbound Flourishing]] [[Abundance]] $2.02 Doubles X on every Ravenous creature spell so paying X=3 enters with six counters and draws a card.
[[Selvala, Heart of the Wilds]] [[Malanthrope]] $5.43 Taps for mana in any color combination equal to your biggest Tyranid's power to fund massive X-spells.
[[Terrasymbiosis]] [[Bone Sabres]] $9.43 Draws a card for each +1/+1 counter placed on a creature once each turn for explosive refills.

[[Garruk's Uprising]] [[Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph]] $0.41 Grants teamwide trample and draws on four-power entries, replacing a one-damage pinger with no support here.
[[Incubation Druid]] [[Explore]] $0.80 Taps for three mana of any type your lands can produce as soon as Biophagus or Magus Lucea Kane gives it a counter.
[[Gyre Sage]] [[Purestrain Genestealer]] $0.57 Grows automatically whenever larger Tyranids enter and taps for green mana equal to its counters.
[[Kiora's Follower]] [[Haruspex]] $0.32 Untaps Magus Lucea Kane or scaling mana dorks on turn two without waiting for creatures to die.
[[Master Biomancer]] [[Gargoyle Flock]] $0.84 Puts +1/+1 counters on every entering creature and token so they trigger The Swarmlord and Winged Hive Tyrant.
[[Loading Zone]] [[Death's Presence]] $1.24 Warps in for one green mana to double counters on a big Ravenous turn before recasting later.
[[Greater Good]] [[Tyranid Harridan]] $1.58 Cashes in giant creatures at instant speed to draw fistfuls of cards when opponents cast exile wipes.

Where to Take the Hive Fleet Next

Upgrading Tyranid Swarm turns a split-personality Warhammer precon into a fast, cohesive Temur monster engine where every creature enters with counters and every X-spell refills your hand. If you want a sharp, cohesive list for casual nights without changing how the deck feels, the $25 tier fixes every dead slot and makes X=5 effortless. The $50 tier is the sweet spot if your pod plays plenty of board wipes and blockers, adding teamwide haste, unblockable finishers, and one-mana countermagic, while the $100 tier is built for players who want exponential counter math and 20-card draw bursts.

Beyond the $100 Budget and Bracket 2

  • [[The Ozolith]] ($62.69): Eating up most of our $100 tier budget on its own, this one-mana artifact banks every counter when your creatures leave the battlefield, even to mass exile or bounce, and dumps the entire pile onto a threat at the start of combat.
  • [[Doubling Season]] ($30.83) and [[Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider]] ($35.51): Both double all counters placed on your permanents, and [[Doubling Season]] also doubles the 1/1 Tyranid tokens created by [[Termagant Swarm]] and [[Tervigon]].
  • [[Kodama of the West Tree]] ($19.48): Grants trample to all modified creatures and ramps a basic land onto the battlefield tapped whenever a modified creature deals combat damage to a player.
  • [[All Will Be One]] ($11.54) and [[Freed from the Real]] ($6.77): Excluded from our Bracket 2 lists because [[All Will Be One]] forms a two-card infinite damage loop with [[The Red Terror]], and [[Freed from the Real]] makes infinite mana with [[Incubation Druid]] or [[Kami of Whispered Hopes]].
